Indian Marriage
Indian marriages can never be complete without abiding by certain customs. Wedding customs and rituals vary by religion and caste. Apart from traditional rituals, these customs also signify each step a bride takes before moving into her new home. Based on various cultures, the approach to marriage is celebrated differently. However, the warmth, vibrancy and celebration are always included in these marriages. India has diverse wedding customs and can vary from a Bengali wedding to a Muslim one. Here is a brief listing of various Indian wedding customs:
Tamil wedding customs: Marriages are generally avoided in the months of Aashad, Bhadrapad and Shunya. The wedding customs are segregated into pre-wedding, wedding and post wedding rituals. In the Tamil wedding ceremony, the most important wedding customs are: the Panda Kaal Muhurtham, receiving the groom, Pallikai Thellichal ceremony, Mangala Snaanam, exchange of garlands, Saptapadi, Laaja Honam and Grihapravesham.
Punjabi wedding customs: Some Punjabi customs reflect the Sufism and Hinduism ones. One of the main Punjabi wedding customs is selecting the wedding day. Some of the rituals and wedding customs of Punjabis are: Kachchi Mishri, the Pakki Mishri ceremony, Saagri tradition, Threat ceremony, Hathialo tradition, Datar ceremony and Sataurah custom.
Muslim wedding customs: Muslims wedding customs significantly differ from other religions. Once the marriage date is finalized, the father of the groom presents a cash amount to the bride’s father. The Muslim wedding (Nikah) is a “must see” event. Additionally, praying before and after the wedding is mandatory for both the bride and groom.
Oriya wedding customs: For unknown reasons, one of the prime wedding customs of Orissa people are that the mother of the groom is not permitted to attend the wedding. Kanyadan is the major custom where the bride’s father places the bride’s hands on the hands of the bridegroom.
Almost every state of India has its own unique wedding custom. In this modern generation, some wedding customs have been abolished for different reasons.
Marriage or Simcha
The Simcha celebrates the union of a Jewish couple. This simple ceremony is performed under a canopy and is carried out with a vow and an exchange of rings. There are no specific wedding gifts. In most cases, the bride and groom already have a registry listing.
The Mikovaot
According to Jewish customs, this ceremony is a cleansing bath that is a ritual and one of the longest standing Jewish customs. This ceremony is performed to endow marriages. Orthodox Jewish women are required to dip themselves in this bath every month after their menstruation before resuming marriage relations with their husbands. Since this is more of a routine custom and not a milestone ceremony, gifts are not given.
