I met my husband while managing a hotel...his job had brought him there on business. He will tell you that when he met me the first time it was love at first sight. Life changed for him at that moment. I took a little longer due to that professional barrier of not dating in the work environment. It didn't take long for that barrier to collapse and the rest is history.
Our relationship is one when observed on the surface; others will rush to declare this match is destined to fail. He's black, I'm white. I'm older by double digits. We lived in different states. My family closed the door to our relationship and then severed ties with myself and my son.
But you know, it's by far the strongest relationship I have experienced in my entire life.
Why? Commitment and Communication. Communication is the number one key to success with any relationship. We talk about everything, no matter is too small. We hold no secrets from each other, ever.
We agree to disagree and often do. We constantly define who we are, as a couple and as individuals within the family and what we can do to improve and grow on all levels.
Commitment: We put each other first, even before ourselves. Friends, jobs, even family never, ever come before our relationship, period. We are a united front when leading our children, even if we don't happen to agree on a specific matter.
Quality time for just the two of us is something we make time for even it's at the expense of tight schedules, needy kids or sleep deprivation. We never leave or go to sleep angry with one another. Life isn't guaranteed, if this was our last moment together before parting, it will be a last moment remembered on good terms.
We pray together each day and ask for guidance from God to strengthen and bless our relationship…..and you know what? He does.
